The Democrat Party was accused by former President Donald Trump and his running mate, J.D. Vance, of orchestrating a “coup” against President Joe Biden. Vance asserted that Biden should not be allowed to finish out his term as president if he is unfit to run for re-election.

A coup d’état is “a sudden decisive exercise of force in politics, especially the violent overthrow or alteration of an existing government by a small group,” according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary.

Additionally, Cornell Law School explains that the “25th Amendment, proposed by Congress and ratified by the states in the aftermath of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, provides the procedures for replacing the president or vice president in the event of death, removal, resignation, or incapacitation.”

In a video that aired on Monday morning on Fox News, the GOP ticket remarked on Biden’s health, his mental decline, and the news of him not seeking re-election.

Jesse Watters of Fox News: “You’d investigate the people that hid Joe Biden’s condition?”

Trump: “Well, I think somebody has to look at it. Look, you had people that lied to the American public. And I tell you what…. You ought to take a look at his doctors because his doctors keep giving him this wonderful report. I’m not a doctor, but I saw him the other day, was unable to get up the children stairs going into Air Force One.”

They continued, telling Watters of the “Primetime” program that Biden should not be allowed to step down in a fashion that would only benefit his party.

Trump had also quietly responded, “sort of,” to the question of whether Biden’s withdrawal from the race was due to an internal “coup” against him, just before Vance interrupted.

Vance: “Yeah, I think it is. I mean, look, there’s a constitutional process, the 25th Amendment. If Joe Biden can’t run for president, he can’t serve as president.”

“And if they want to take him down because he’s mentally incapable of serving, invoke the 25th Amendment. You don’t get to sort of do this in the most politically beneficial way for Democrats. If it’s an actual problem, they should take care of it the appropriate way,” he continued.

Prior to the announcement on Sunday that Biden would be withdrawing from the 2024 general election and supporting Vice President Kamala Harris as the likely Democrat contender, the interview was recorded with Trump and Vance on Saturday.

Additionally, hours before Biden made his declaration, Vance reiterated his opinion on the matter on social media.

“Not running for reelection would be a clear admission that President Trump was right all along about Biden not being mentally fit enough to serve as Commander-in-Chief,” Vance said on X. “There is no middle ground.”
